Exactly. How much "work" is it to type out a useful title? Almost none. And yet we see one douchily obscure title after another, and those who politely call for better get berated.

That's not how HN titles work but you can find out a lot about how and why they work like they do in the docs and reams of mod comments. There's a Talmud's worth of stuff in there.

How they "work?" They don't "work." You create a post and type out an appropriate title. Or not, and then you can deal with someone who calls you out on it. Your choice.
